A Theology of Suffering

Vol. 39, No. 12 - December 2008 The idea that suffering is essential to Christianity, that suffering draws us closer to Christ, benefits the church, and produces servant disciples, are all true, but these concepts are very rarely articulated in what many today have termed "user-friendly" Christianity. However, Ajith Fernando ...

The Emergent Church
Vol. 37, No. 4 _ April 2006

Since it appeared last year, Donald Carson’s Becoming Conversant with the Emerging Church (Zondervan) has been both favorably and unfavorably reviewed - favorably by conservative evangelicals, unfavorably by those "evangelicals" who are part of the Emerging Church movement. This was to be expected. What is this movement? Basically, it is a movement of people who believe the church must use new modes of expressing the gospel as western culture adopts a postmodern mindset.

Are You a "Christian" Materialist?
 Vol. 36, No. 10 _ October 2005

Materialism is defined by Webster as "a preoccupation with or stress on material things rather than intellectual or spiritual things." As this definition implies, and as Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels makes clear (Matt. 6:19-20), Christianity and materialism have historically been at odds with each other. This is not only because of Jesus’ teaching and urging that His followers should focus on spiritual things and lay up for themselves treasures in heaven, but also because materialist philosophers generally deny the kind of spiritual realities that are fundamental to the Christian faith.

Rights and Wrongs of Prayer

Vol. 37, No. 1 _ January 2006

Soon after Bruce Wilkinson’s book, The Prayer of Jabez (Multnomah, 2000) was released, a spate of books were written by evangelical authors in response. At least one of them, by Douglas Jones, deliberately simulated the cover of Wilkinson’s book. In addition to Jones’, other books have included Gary Gilley’s "I Just Wanted More Land" - Jabez (Xulon, 2001), Steven Hopkins’ The Cult of Jabez (Bethel Press, 2002), Neal Snider’s A Letter to Jabez (Augsburg Books, 2004), Matthew Power’s The Prayer of Jabez and Christian Spirituality (1st Books, 2003), Hank Hanegraaff’s The Prayer of Jesus (W Publishing Group, 2001), and James Mulholland’s Praying Like Jesus (Harper, 2001).

The subtitle of Mulholland’s book is telling: "The Lord’s Prayer in a Culture of Prosperity." The author’s introduction is a well-written recreation of what did not happen two thousand years ago with the disciples and Jesus when they asked Him to teach them how to pray. However, Mulholland observes, it is exactly what is happening today in thousands of churches around the world, due in large part to Bruce Wilkin-son’s book, The Prayer of Jabez.
